Ron Dowling, 1922 - 2021

We are very sad to have to let you know that Ron passed away last Monday with his family by his side. Ron was a one off and a legend…….

He was kind; a good listener; very wise; had a great sense of fun and was a true gentleman, reliable and loyal to the core from a generation who gave so much of themselves and never asked for anything in return. He was brave, selfless and stood up for the things he believed in – and Scouting was one of those things.

We remember him with love and great pride and affection and Remembrance Sunday at Woodcote Village Green will never be the same again. Always immaculately dressed, he was determined to continue to lay our wreath and give the salute – including last November – and wouldn’t hear of his daughter Anne, assisting him as he did so.

Ron was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for bravery during the Second World War, and the Medal of Merit for outstanding service to Scouting over many years.

Ron was loved by us all and will be greatly missed. He was one of those very rare people able to cross the generations. Our Cubs were enthralled with his stories; our young leaders held him in greatest respect and our leader team loved him to bits. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter Anne, his family and his friends.
